A proposal for a community center in the Averne neighborhood in the Rockaway peninsula that also functions as an emergency shelter in the event of extreme weather conditions.
The community center will be a space where people in the neighborhood can learn how to make acoustic guitars with areas throughout the center to craft, store, and sell their finished products. People are also able to learn how to play the guitars in classroom spaces and have the chance to perform music with different areas for performance.
In the event of extreme weather-related conditions, certain areas of the community center can become places for refuge. "Conditioned" spaces provide shelter and those that are "unconditioned," become areas that can be sacrificed during rising sea levels.
Circulation throughout the community center allows for multiple ways to enter and exit the building while also allowing for movement around the central atrium space so that visitors can listen to performances taking place on the ground floor.
Musical performance becomes an integral part of the community center as a way of bringing people in the neighborhood together where the sound from performances projects inwards on the interior and outwards in outdoor performance spaces.
For materials, the community center utilizes metal-cladding and concrete in the exterior to create a durable facade that can withstand water and other natural elements while the interior utilizes timber structures to bring in natural and softer qualities to the spaces.
